I provide German-to-English translation services for contexts that demand a high degree of precision and sensibility, with a focus on academic, policy and literary texts. When nuance is essential, you can count on me to work with you to strike exactly the right tone.

Unlike most agency translators, I have personally authored the kinds of documents that clients ask me to translate – policy reports, academic papers, briefing notes, editorials, etc. – and know exactly how to tailor the text from an analytical and audience-focused perspective.

I hold a Master-equivalent Diploma in Translation (DipTrans) from the Chartered Institute of Linguistics with specialisations in Social Science und Literature. I am also a full member of the leading professional associations for translators in both Germany (BDÜ, VdÜ, AVÜ) and the UK (CIOL, ITI, SoA:TA).

My published book translations include Winterberg’s Last Journey (July 2024), Christmas in Prague (October 2024), The Dead of Columbiadamm (October 2024) and A Users’ Guide to Train Travel (Spring 2025), all by Jaroslav Rudiš and published in English by Jantar Publishing (UK).

Subtitling

I do regular German>English subtitling for German evening news broadcasts (ZDF’s heute um 19:00 und heute journal) as well as scripted and unscripted events, documentaries, films and TV series.

My primary software is EZTitles but I have a working knowledge of other platforms including SubtitleEdit and web-based editors.

Editing & Proofreading

I have been editing texts for my peers – and frequently for my superiors – since as long as I can remember. At the WZB Berlin Social Science Centre and at Civic Consulting, I edited academic and policy papers of the highest calibre. During my time in the President’s Office at Berlin’s prestigious Hertie School, the President ran his most challenging communications through me first, trusting me to strike the right tone on even the most controversial topics.

In my years as a researcher and analyst in government, academia and private consulting, I wrote literally hundreds of texts in every format and for every audience imaginable: research papers, policy reports, briefing notes, blog posts, presentations, press releases, editorials and more. I know exactly what goes into each type of writing, and how to make it better.

My services in this area are more than ‘just’ editing or proofreading: I work with you to make your English writing more effective in context. I specialise in working with non-native English speakers and am happy to provide more extensive feedback and advice if requested.

My editing rates depend on the length and complexity of the text as well as the intensity of editing requested. I offer three levels of service:

• Basic language editing (correction of obvious linguistic errors only)
• Style editing (improving flow and diction, creating a ‘native-sounding’ text)
• Style and content editing (improving argumentation, persuasiveness, structure, tone)

My breadth of experience has taught me that context matters above all, and I will work with you and/or your organisation to craft the perfect text for your needs.
